I am a specialist on the biology and fossil record of coccolithophores. These are minute planktonic algae which produce delicate calcareous skeletons and so may be particularly susceptible to ocean acidification. Within the project my main objective is to measure the effects of ocean acidification on coccolithophore populations and on their ability to calcify. On the cruise I will be collecting a large set of plankton samples, mainly by filtering sea-water, and using my microscope to provide a first analysis of the plankton populations we encounter.
